Towny is a popular plugin found on many servers used to create protected regions (Towns) that can be shared among players. Towns can be further organized into Nations, which can offer protection, resources, a community and most importantly - rewards. Towns and Nations require money to pay their upkeep, which comes, ultimately, from the Jobs plugin. A single, dedicated player can support a fairly decent sized Town, but maintaining a Town is much easier when the income is distributed among a group of players via the tax system.
Creating your own Town may very well be your goal on the server, and it has been designed to be an accessible milestone for anyone. Joining a Town, however, offers community, protection, and a local economy. Solo Mayors may struggle to maintain upkeep and may end up targets for more populous, military-minded Towns. Having a Town with a decent population can ensure that it still exists if you need to take a while off from the game, as your Town members will still be paying taxes and defending your Town in your absence.
